Introduction

The Appalachian Trail (AT) is a world-renowned hiking trail that stretches over 2,190 miles from Georgia to Maine. Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is a popular starting (or ending) point for thru-hikers and day-hikers alike. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, home to Gatlinburg, offers stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, and a variety of hiking trails for all levels of experience.

Planning Your Hike

Choosing a Trailhead

Newfound Gap (mile marker 441.4) is the most popular trailhead in Gatlinburg. Other options include Sugarlands Visitor Center (mile marker 0) and Clingmans Dome (mile marker 469).

Before embarking on your hike, be sure to check the National Park Service website for trail closures and weather conditions.

Once you've chosen your trailhead, you can decide how far you want to hike. Popular day hikes from Gatlinburg include:

Shuckstack Fire Tower Trail: (5 miles round-trip; 1,300ft elevation gain) Rainbow Falls Trail: (5.5 miles round-trip; 1,500ft elevation gain) Chimney Tops Trail: (3.2 miles round-trip; 1,400ft elevation gain) Charlies Bunion Hike: (8 miles round-trip; 1,600ft elevation gain)

Packing for Your Hike

When packing for your hike, be sure to bring the following essentials:

  • Backpack (30-45 liters is recommended)
  • Hiking shoes or boots
  • Comfortable clothing (moisture-wicking fabrics are best)
  • Plenty of water (1 liter per hour of hiking is recommended)
  • Snacks and/or lunch
  • First-aid kit
  • Map and compass or GPS device
  • Cell phone and/or personal locator beacon
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Rain gear
  • Trekking poles (optional, but recommended)

The Appalachian Trail is a challenging but rewarding hike. Be sure to take your time and enjoy the scenery. Here are a few tips for hiking the AT:
