Peru approves second anchovy fishing season
Peru has approved a second fishing season for anchovies offshore from April 28 through June 15 this year.
The Ministry of Production approved the measure based on a stock assessment conducted by the Marine Institute of Peru (Imarpe).
The anchovy population within the fishing zone has grown since the end of the first season in January, which ran from November 22, 2022, through January 27 this year and produced 750,000 tonnes of anchovy.
The official estimate is that the anchovy population now includes 3.8 million tonnes of biomass, 2.5 million tonnes of which would be available for harvest.
Peru’s second anchovy fishing season only applies to the north-central zone of its coast, where industrial vessels fish for human consumption and fishmeal production.
The fishing season for the south-central zone ended earlier this year on April 3 with a catch of 2.4 million metric tons of anchoveta.
